Spartacus

Spartacus: Blood and Sand is definitely one of the best TV shows I have ever seen. If you enjoyed the movie 300, you will love Spartacus.

This was released in January 2010, and I got to watch it only recently. I was more into comedy and drama (How I Met Your Mother, Gossip Girl, Grey’s Anatomy, and the like) until I outgrew them and explored other genre.

In the series, Spartacus (played by Andy Whitfield) is a Thracian gladiator trained under the House of Batiatus. Inside the House, he was harassed by senior gladiators, gained a friend, lost his wife, controlled by his Dominus, became the Champion of Capua and carried out his revenge. The show is reeking with hatred, greed and anger, you can actually taste them.

Every episode is packed with action. Fight scenes in the arena are always blood-soaked. Erotic scenes are common, clearly depicting a different kind of exotic sexuality during the Roman times. Because of the bloody and sexy scenes, viewer discretion is advised at the start of each episode.

The best part of the TV series….is Andy Whitfield himself! So perfect for the role! Sizzling hot!

Unfortunately, Andy was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in March 2010. This caused the delay in the production of Season 2. While he was undergoing treatment and waiting for his recovery, a mini-series was produced. The 6-episode prequel entitled Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, showcased the history of the House of Batiatus before the arrival of Spartacus.

On 11 September 2011, Andy died at the age of 39, after battling lymphoma for 18 months.

For the second season, Spartacus: Vengeance, the lead role is played by Liam McIntyre. I am yet to watch it. I hope Liam will be as effective as Andy.

On the other hand, actor John Hannah (who played the role Quintus Batiatus) is at his best in this show. I couldn’t imagine the role being played by somebody else. It’s as if being Batiatus was tailor-made for him.

Highly recommended! Go, watch!
